In the early hours of October 1, 2017, the vibrant atmosphere of downtown Lawrence, Kansas, was shattered by a burst of gunfire that ended the life of 24-year-old Tremel Dupree Dean, a Black/African American male from Topeka. The shooting, which occurred around 1:40 a.m. near the intersection of 11th and Massachusetts streets, also claimed the lives of Leah Elizabeth Brown, 22, and Colwin Lynn Henderson, 20.
