On the evening of November 24, 2021, Peyton James Whitaker, an 18-year-old Caucasian male from Topeka, Kansas, was fatally shot at a residence in the 200 block of Yorkshire Drive in Lawrence. Lawrence police officers responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 9:15 p.m. and discovered Whitaker with a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrests of two individuals from Topeka on December 1, 2021.
Mehki McDaniel, 20, was taken into custody on suspicion of second-degree murder and felony theft. Ansley Fogle, 24, was arrested on suspicion of interference with law enforcement and obstructing apprehension or prosecution. The arrests were made in McPherson County through a coordinated effort between the Lawrence Police Department, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and the McPherson County Sheriff's Office.
Court proceedings revealed the tragic circumstances of Whitaker's death. McDaniel and an associate had stolen multiple firearms and were attempting to sell them in the basement of the Yorkshire Drive home. While McDaniel was demonstrating a modified Glock handgun, the weapon accidentally discharged, striking Whitaker in the side. In April 2022, McDaniel pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of theft. During the sentencing, Whitaker's family expressed their profound grief and sense of betrayal, stating that they had considered McDaniel a friend to Peyton. In July 2022, McDaniel was sentenced to 46 months in prison. Fogle was formally charged with interference with law enforcement and obstructing apprehension or prosecution.
Peyton Whitaker was remembered by his family and friends as a kind-hearted individual who had a deep love for his family, pets, and the outdoors. He was known for his friendly nature and his willingness to help others.
