In the early hours of June 13, 2024, the life of 17-year-old male Isaiah Neal was tragically cut short in Lawrence, Kansas. Responding to reports of gunshots around 1:15 a.m., police arrived at a residence on Alabama Street to find the teenager suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in a grassy area near his home. First responders initiated life-saving measures and transported him to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, but he was pronounced deceased.
The incident left his family, including his mother and younger sister who shared the home, devastated.
The events leading up to the fatal shooting began earlier that night when Cir Allen Keith Glover, an 18-year-old described as a childhood friend of Neal's, came to visit. While the two were in Neal's upstairs bedroom, a gunshot rang out, which Neal later told his mother was an accidental discharge. Upset that Glover had brought a firearm into her home, Neal's mother ordered him to leave. Shortly after Glover departed, Neal went outside and was shot multiple times. Investigators later revealed that Neal had been shot seven times in the back, allegedly with his own gun which was missing from the scene.
The investigation quickly centered on Glover, who was located and arrested the following day in Miami County. Initially charged with second-degree murder, the charge was later elevated to first-degree murder after a preliminary hearing. Testimony during the court proceedings suggested a recent falling out between the two friends over an incident involving the mother of Glover's child. Another possible motive presented was a dispute related to a drug transaction or an attempted robbery.
Ultimately, Cir Allen Keith Glover pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of reckless second-degree murder as part of a plea agreement. He accepted responsibility for the pain caused and was subsequently sentenced to 10 years in prison for the shooting death of his friend. The case left the community mourning the loss of a young high school student, who was also the father of a young son he would never get to meet.
