In the early morning hours of March 17, 2006, the life of 8-year-old Lionel Homsombath was tragically cut short in a violent act that also claimed the lives of his mother and sister in their Northeast Portland, Oregon, apartment. The young boy was found in the living room of his home, having been shot twice in the head as he lay on a mattress or blanket.
The discovery was made after a neighbor reported hearing gunshots around 5:30 a.m.
When police gained entry to the apartment, they found a horrific scene. Lionel's mother, 24-year-old Soupaphane Homsombath, had been shot and killed on the couch. His 5-year-old sister, Leana Homsombath, was found in a bedroom, having been stabbed to death.
Investigators quickly identified the suspect as 31-year-old Somkhith Soulinho, the boyfriend of Soupaphane Homsombath and her former brother-in-law. Police concluded that Soulinho was responsible for the three murders before taking his own life. His body was also found inside the apartment.
While the exact motive for the triple murder-suicide remained under investigation, authorities described the incident as a domestic issue. Soulinho had a known history of violence, including a previous conviction for shooting his own brother, for which he had served five years in prison. Family and friends suggested that drugs may have played a role in the tragic events. The Portland Police Bureau described the scene as complicated and deeply unsettling for the officers involved.
