On March 25, 2023, Patrick D. Johnson Jr., a 20-year-old resident of Portland, Oregon, was fatally shot in a triple homicide that occurred in the North Portland area. Johnson was traveling in a car with two other victims, Eskender Tamra, 17, and Babu Daudi 19, when their vehicle was targeted by gunfire. The incident happened on North Foss Avenue near University Park, where police responded to reports of heavy gunfire at 12:23 p.m..
The victims were found dead inside a light-colored
sedan. Doorbell video footage captured the shooting, showing three people on foot firing repeatedly at the sedan, with the sound of about three dozen shots recorded.
Patrick D. Johnson Jr. was one of the three young men killed in this violent incident. The other two victims, Eskender Tamra and Babu Daudi, were high school students; Tamra was a junior at Franklin High School, and Daudi was a senior at Roosevelt High School. Tamra had immigrated to Oregon from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with his older sister to pursue better educational opportunities and was known for being motivated, outgoing, and genuinely kind.
An investigation into the triple homicide led to the arrest of Omar Mohammed Osman, an 18-year-old man, who was charged with multiple counts related to the murders. Osman faces a 27-count indictment, including six counts of first-degree murder, four counts of second-degree murder, and various other charges such as unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a firearm. Police suspect that at least two other people were involved in the shooting but have not yet been arrested.
The FBI had offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case, and the community was deeply affected by the tragedy. The indictment against Osman is seen as a first step toward healing for the families of the victims and the community at large.
