In the early morning hours of September 4, 2024, a young Black/African American man named Malik Wilkerson, 21, was fatally shot in downtown Portland, Oregon. The incident occurred at approximately 3:36 a.m. in the vicinity of Southwest 3rd Avenue and Southwest Ankeny Street. Following the shooting, Wilkerson was transported to a local hospital in a private vehicle, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The medical examiner later confirmed that he died from a gunshot wound and officially ruled his death a homicide.
Initial reports indicated that the suspect or suspects had fled the scene before police officers arrived, and no immediate arrests were made. A witness who was working nearby reported seeing a group of people in a parking lot and hearing an argument just before several gunshots rang out. Homicide detectives were called to the scene to begin an investigation into the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting.
Several months later, a breakthrough in the case was announced. On January 9, 2025, police arrested 19-year-old Malachai Martin in connection with Wilkerson's death. Investigators had obtained surveillance video from the parking lot where the shooting took place. The footage reportedly showed Wilkerson speaking with Martin or his friends before turning to walk away. It was at this point that Martin allegedly pulled out a handgun and began firing at Wilkerson.
Following his arrest, Malachai Martin was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center. He is facing a charge of Murder in the Second Degree for his alleged role in the shooting death of Malik Wilkerson. The family of Malik Wilkerson was notified of the arrest.
