In the late hours of a Thursday night in Portland, Oregon, the life of Khamori V. Loving, a 41-year-old Black/African American man, was tragically cut short. On May 11, 2023, in the Hazelwood neighborhood, Loving was fatally shot. The incident unfolded near Northeast 122nd Avenue and Northeast Wasco Street.
An East Precinct sergeant on patrol was flagged down at approximately 11:46 p.m. and directed to an injured man just east of the intersection.
Despite the sergeant's call for emergency medical services, Loving was already deceased at the scene. The initial investigation pointed to Loving having been shot, and the medical examiner later confirmed that he died of homicide by gunshot.
In the immediate aftermath, Portland Police Homicide Unit detectives launched an investigation, but no suspects were located at the scene, and no arrests have been made. Loving's family was notified of his death and requested privacy while providing a photograph of him for public release. The case marked the 32nd homicide in Portland for the year 2023. As the investigation continued, authorities appealed to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case, with a reward being offered for tips several months later.
