On a warm evening on June 20, 2022, a family celebration at Raymond City Park in Portland, Oregon, turned into a scene of tragedy. Geavauntae Sherman, a 22-year-old male, was at the park for his younger sister's birthday party. The joyous occasion took a dark turn when an argument erupted between his family and another group at the park, reportedly over the use of a swing set.
Geavauntae stepped in to de-escalate the situation, attempting to bring a sense of calm to the rising tensions.
Witnesses reported that as Geavauntae tried to intervene verbally, an unidentified male from the other group pulled out a gun and shot him. Following the shooting, Geavauntae was quickly placed in a private vehicle by his family, who then raced to get him to a hospital. On the way, at the intersection of Southeast 122nd Avenue and Southeast Division Street, they encountered a police sergeant. The officer stopped to render aid but found that Geavauntae had already succumbed to his injuries. The medical examiner later confirmed that he died from a gunshot wound and ruled his death a homicide.
In the wake of the shooting, the Portland Police Bureau's Homicide Unit launched an investigation. Despite the presence of numerous witnesses in the park that evening, no arrests have been made, and the suspect or suspects remain at large. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has become involved in the case, offering a reward of up to $15,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for Geavauntae Sherman's death.
