In the early morning hours of May 24, 2019, the quiet of a Southeast Portland neighborhood was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of 44-year-old Sergey Peshkov, a White male. Peshkov was discovered in the front yard of a residence on Southeast Reedway Street, the victim of a fatal shooting. The Portland Police Bureau launched a homicide investigation, and it was later determined by the medical examiner that Peshkov had died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The
investigation revealed a tragic sequence of events leading to Peshkov's death. He had confronted a group of teenagers, including 19-year-old Michael Christopher Ramirez, who were prowling cars in the neighborhood. After his initial warning, Peshkov approached the group a second time. While the others walked away, Ramirez remained and shot Peshkov multiple times before fleeing the scene. In a chilling turn of events, Ramirez and three of the teens returned to the location hours later to view Peshkov's body, with Ramirez reportedly bragging about the killing.
The following day, Ramirez was involved in another fatal shooting, killing 18-year-old Lorenzo Gordon in the parking lot of an apartment complex. Forensic evidence connected the same firearm to both murders. Ramirez was arrested on May 26, 2019, on an unrelated matter and subsequently incriminated himself in both shootings while in custody. In July 2022, a jury found Michael Christopher Ramirez guilty on four counts, including two counts of Murder in the Second Degree with a Firearm. He was later sentenced for his crimes.
