The friend went to Pierce's house in the 2700 block of NW Marshal Street in Portland, Oregon, to check on him. Upon arrival, the friend discovered the front door open and, after entering the home, found Pierce deceased on the floor.
Portland police were called to the scene and quickly determined that Roger Pierce had been the victim of homicidal
violence. Investigators learned that Pierce, while reportedly well-regarded, was also known to be a heavy drinker. Described by acquaintances as quiet and a "loner," he was separated from his wife at the time of his death. The last known sighting of Pierce was two days prior, on the evening of July 30, 1980, at the Nobbie Tavern, located near the intersection of NW 23rd and Lovejoy.
