In the crisp early autumn of 2004, a veil of smoke hanging over a North Portland neighborhood signaled a tragedy that would remain shrouded in mystery for years to come. On the afternoon of September 18, the Portland Fire Bureau responded to reports of smoke emanating from a residence at 9742 N James Street. Inside, amidst the haze, firefighters discovered the body of the home's resident, Thomas Swift, a 57-year-old Caucasian male.
