In the late morning of December 21, 2022, a sense of tragedy befell a Southeast Portland neighborhood. Abed Fattoum, a 57-year-old White male, found his life abruptly cut short in the Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood. At approximately 10:52 a.m., officers from the Central Precinct were dispatched to the intersection of Southeast 9th Avenue and Southeast Market Street following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered an injured man and immediately began to render medical aid, applying a chest seal to his wound. Despite their efforts and his subsequent transport to a local hospital, Abed Fattoum succumbed to his injuries. The Medical Examiner's Office would later confirm that his death was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound.
The Portland Police Bureau's Homicide Unit promptly took charge of the investigation, closing off the surrounding streets to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Their intensive work quickly led to a breakthrough. In the early hours of the following day, December 22, 2022, authorities arrested 38-year-old Kailen R. Guffey. He was booked into the Multnomah County jail on several serious charges, including second-degree murder with a firearm, first-degree robbery with a firearm, felon in possession of a firearm, and unlawful use of a weapon.
The investigation did not end with Guffey's arrest. Detectives continued to pursue leads, and their efforts resulted in the identification of a second individual connected to the crime. On January 10, 2023, with the assistance of the United States Marshals Service, Portland Police Homicide Detectives and Neighborhood Response Teams located and arrested 26-year-old Bonscott J. Skinner. He was taken into custody in the 100 block of North Morris Street and was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm and a stolen vehicle at the time of his arrest. Skinner was subsequently booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, and first-degree burglary, marking another significant development in the case of Abed Fattoum's untimely death.
