A bright life was cut short on the evening of September 14, 2019, in Charleston, West Virginia, when Daniel PJ Lymon, a 26-year-old Black/African American male, was fatally shot. Lymon was driving on Charleston's West Side when he was struck in the head by gunfire. The vehicle he was operating then crashed near the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and 7th Street. Another individual was reportedly in the car with Lymon at the time of the shooting but fled the scene.
Daniel, known affectionately as "PJ," was a Charleston native, born on August 30, 1993. He was a graduate of George Washington High School and was remembered for his sense of humor and his passion for basketball, having played in the Kanawha City Youth League and for the AAU. He was a father to a son, Daniel Jr., and a daughter, Jayla Rose.
His family and friends described him as a leader within his community and his church, Rehobeth Cathedral Church of Christ.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Charleston Police Department launched an investigation into Lymon's death, ruling it a homicide. Authorities publicly appealed for information from the community to help identify the shooter. Investigators were keen to speak with the passenger who fled the vehicle after the crash.
