In the winter of 2021, the life of a Black/African American fourteen-year-old boy named Jamon Winfrey was tragically cut short. On the evening of February 24th, in Davenport, Iowa, Jamon was found shot in the 1300 block of Farnam Street. Known affectionately as "Snoop" to his friends and family, Jamon was described as a loving and outgoing young man who was full of life and never afraid to speak his mind.
In his free time, he enjoyed playing video games and spending time with his friends.
The initial discovery of Jamon's death launched a significant investigation by local law enforcement. The authorities worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Their efforts led them to identify and charge three men in connection with the murder of the teenager. The suspects were identified as John E. Hanes III, Javon Combs, and Chrystian Smith, all from Davenport.
The legal process for the three men unfolded over the following years. In February of 2023, Chrystian Smith pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. A few months later, in May, Javon Combs accepted a plea deal and agreed to be a witness in the trial of the third suspect. Later that same month, on May 23, 2023, a jury found John E. Hanes III guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Jamon Winfrey, bringing a measure of closure to a case that had deeply affected the community.
