In the late morning of August 22, 2021, a disagreement between roommates in a Sioux City, Iowa, residence escalated into a fatal encounter. Jason Lafferty, a 41-year-old Caucasian male, was shot and killed in the home he shared with his acquaintance, Robert D. Buel. The Sioux City Police Department received a report of the shooting at approximately 9:28 a.m.
and responded to the residence in the 200 block of 21st Street.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Jason Lafferty with a gunshot wound. He succumbed to his injury at the scene. Inside the residence, police also found 52-year-old Robert D. Buel, who was identified as the shooter and taken into custody without incident. Investigators determined that the two men had been involved in an argument prior to the shooting. Following the verbal altercation, Lafferty went to the garage.
Buel, armed with both a shotgun and a handgun, followed Lafferty into the garage. He initially pointed the shotgun at Lafferty before setting it down. Buel then shot Lafferty with the handgun. Following the investigation, Robert D. Buel was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He was subsequently booked into the Woodbury County Jail.
Jason Lafferty, born on March 4, 1980, in Sioux City, was a welder and construction worker who enjoyed fishing, being outdoors, and working on cars. His unexpected death left behind a wife, a son, and a daughter.
