On a summer evening in Sioux City, Iowa, a dispute between several people would tragically end the life of 36-year-old Marlon White-Eyes, a Native American man. The events of June 26, 2023, unfolded near 14th Street and Ingleside Avenue, where an initial altercation at an apartment building escalated.
An argument had broken out involving Yasin Ahmed Abdi and three other men with White-Eyes.
During this confrontation, threats were made against White-Eyes, and Abdi brandished a handgun, pointing it at him before White-Eyes was able to close the apartment door. The situation then moved outside, where Abdi's group became involved in a physical fight with two other individuals. White-Eyes, who was not involved in the second altercation, approached the scene. It was at this point that Abdi fired his handgun seven times, striking White-Eyes four times.
Emergency services were called, and White-Eyes was rushed to MercyOne hospital in critical condition, but he later succumbed to his injuries. An investigation was immediately launched by the Sioux City Police Department. Surveillance footage of the incident and interviews with witnesses, including two of the men who were with Abdi, led to the identification of Abdi as the shooter. A warrant for his arrest was issued on June 29, and he was taken into custody the next day.
Yasin Ahmed Abdi, a 20-year-old from South Sioux City, Nebraska, at the time of the incident, was charged with first-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty, and his trial took place in Woodbury County District Court. During the trial, prosecutors argued that the act was premeditated, while the defense claimed it was an act of self-defense, stating that Abdi only fired when White-Eyes approached his friends who were fighting. After approximately 10 hours of deliberation, the jury found Yasin Abdi guilty of first-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to a mandatory life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole.
