In the winter of 2023, the life of 31-year-old Nathaniel John Parker III, a male resident of Sioux City, Iowa, was cut short by gunfire. On the night of Sunday, December 3rd, just before midnight, officers were called to an apartment building at 513 9th Street following reports of shots fired. There they discovered Parker, who had sustained a single gunshot wound.
Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Parker's death quickly revealed a complex backstory. Just weeks prior, on November 7th, a Woodbury County jury had acquitted him of a first-degree murder charge. He had been accused in the stabbing death of William Harlan. Following his acquittal, Parker was arrested again on November 8th at the very same 9th Street address where he would later be killed. At the time of that arrest, police noted he was not sober and had an apparent minor stab wound and other physical trauma.
Authorities believed the fatal shooting of Parker was a targeted incident. The Sioux City Police Department identified a suspect in the homicide, Faron Starr, and also sought two persons of interest for questioning: Nathaniel Frazier and Amanda Hayes. Police warned that all three individuals should be considered armed and dangerous. On Wednesday, December 6th, at approximately 7:40 PM, Sioux City police officers located and arrested 38-year-old Faron Alan Starr inside a vehicle in the city. He was taken into custody without incident and subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with Nathaniel Parker's death.
