In the early morning hours of September 21, 2023, the life of Michael Lee Schwebach, a 34-year-old Caucasian male, was tragically cut short in Sioux City, Iowa. At approximately 5:14 AM, the sound of gunfire pierced the quiet neighborhood at the intersection of West 19th and Center Street. When officers from the Sioux City Police Department arrived at the scene, they discovered Schwebach suffering from a single gunshot wound.
Emergency medical services were promptly called, and Schwebach
was rushed to MercyOne for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Schwebach, who was originally from Cherokee, Iowa, was a resident of Sioux City at the time of his death.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a targeted attack, and authorities assured the public that there was no ongoing threat to the community. The day after the fatal shooting, on September 22, 2023, an arrest warrant for first-degree murder was issued for 21-year-old Mario Alberto Corona Ruiz of Sioux City.
A coordinated effort between the Sioux City Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives the U.S. Marshals, and the South Sioux City Police Department led to the apprehension of Ruiz. He was located in South Sioux City, Nebraska, and taken into custody without incident.
