On a tragic evening in Sioux City, Iowa, the life of 32-year-old Dolorean Wade, a Black / African American male, was cut short. The events of June 9, 2022, unfolded at his residence at 516 9th Street, a place that should have been a sanctuary. That night, a report of a shooting sent Sioux City Police officers to the address, where they found Wade suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to MercyOne for medical attention, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The initial account of the incident came from Wade's girlfriend, 32-year-old Katrina Lashay Barnes, who also lived at the residence. Barnes initially told investigators that Wade had been outside when he was shot. However, as detectives delved deeper into the circumstances surrounding Wade's death, a different story emerged. The investigation revealed that the couple had been arguing earlier in the day, leading to Wade leaving the residence. When he returned and began pounding on the front door, Barnes fired a shot through the door, striking him. It was also discovered that there was a significant delay in seeking help for Wade; Barnes and another woman present waited 12 minutes before calling 911.
As a result of the investigation, Katrina Lashay Barnes was arrested and faced multiple serious charges, including second-degree murder, possession of marijuana, and possession with intent to deliver fentanyl. Another individual, 25-year-old Jordyn R. Easton of Sioux City, was also implicated and charged with accessory after the fact. Her charges stemmed from her failure to call 911 and for allegedly concealing evidence related to the crime. In a court appearance on June 22, 2022, Barnes pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. Subsequently, Barnes was sentenced to 20 years in prison for her role in the fatal shooting of her boyfriend.
