On the afternoon of February 20, 2025, a violent encounter in Sioux City, Iowa, led to the tragic death of 24-year-old Jamal Bilata. While walking with another person in the 700 block of 16th Street, a vehicle driven by 27-year-old Jonaz Maldonado passed them. Maldonado then allegedly stopped his car in the middle of the street, directed a racial slur at Bilata, and opened fire, shooting him five times.
Bilata sustained gunshot wounds to his neck and shoulder but managed to flee before
collapsing near the intersection of 15th and Jackson Streets. Emergency services arrived and transported him to MercyOne Medical Center in critical condition. He was later transferred to a hospital in Sioux Falls for further treatment, but tragically succumbed to his injuries on February 23.
Following the shooting, the suspect, Jonaz Maldonado, fled the scene at high speed, reportedly reaching over 100 mph in a 35 mph zone. His attempt to escape ended when he crashed his vehicle into a lamppost. Law enforcement apprehended him later that same evening.
Initially, Maldonado was charged with attempted murder. However, following Bilata's death, the charges were upgraded to first-degree murder. In addition to the murder charge, Maldonado faces a slew of other accusations, including being a felon in possession of a firearm, going armed with intent, reckless use of a firearm, eluding law enforcement, and being a habitual offender. He is currently being held in the Woodbury County Jail. Maldonado has a prior criminal record with felony convictions in Iowa for trafficking in stolen weapons, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, and second-degree theft. He has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges related to the death of Jamal Bilata.
