On the afternoon of February 20, 2025, a violent encounter in Sioux City, Iowa, led to the tragic death of 24-year-old Jamal Bilata. While walking with another person in the 700 block of 16th Street, a vehicle driven by 27-year-old Jonaz Maldonado passed them. Maldonado then allegedly stopped his car in the middle of the street, directed a racial slur at Bilata, and opened fire, shooting him five times.
