On May 17, 2014, at approximately 9:43 p.m., New Haven police responded to reports of gunfire near 465 Winthrop Avenue, close to Whalley Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered 44-year-old Otis Lee Powell Jr. suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Powell was promptly transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
