In the early afternoon of October 9, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace at the intersection of Ferry and Wolcott streets in New Haven, Connecticut, leaving a young man's life cut tragically short. Niygere Wicker, a 21-year-old Black / African American male, was riding his dirt bike when the attack occurred. Eyewitnesses reported a vehicle seemingly pursuing him before the fatal shots were fired.
Responding to 911 calls that began flooding in at 12:03 p.m., New Haven police
officers arrived to a grim scene. They discovered Wicker suffering from gunshot wounds. He was immediately rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
In the wake of the shooting, detectives from the New Haven Police Department descended upon the Fair Haven neighborhood, establishing a crime scene and beginning the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to Wicker's death. While they were able to identify a suspect vehicle connected to the shooting, the individuals inside and their motives remained elusive. The police have made public appeals for information, urging anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward and contact detectives.
