On the night of September 6, 2021, at approximately 11:29 p.m., New Haven police responded to 911 calls reporting a shooting on Poplar Street between Lombard and Chatham Streets in the Fair Haven neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers discovered 45-year-old Luis Fernando Gonzalez-Sandoz, a local resident, who had been fatally shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
