On the night of July 3, 2022, 17-year-old New Haven resident and recent High School in the Community graduate, John Tubac, was involved in a fatal altercation on Poplar Street. The incident began when Tubac, accompanied by a female passenger, was accused by 26-year-old Kiyon Matheney of racing his Ford pickup truck through the neighborhood.
