On June 13, 2002, New Haven Police Officer Robert V. Fumiatti, aged 31 at the time, was engaged in an undercover narcotics operation with approximately ten other officers. After completing a drug raid elsewhere in the city, the team proceeded in an unmarked van to the intersection of Washington Avenue and West Street.
