In the summer of 2021, the life of 33-year-old Kevin Mills, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short in New Haven, Connecticut. On the afternoon of August 10th, gunshots rang out on Dixwell Avenue, between Cherry Ann and Elizabeth streets. When police arrived at the scene around 1:30 p.m., they found Mills suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
Kevin Mills, a father of four, was remembered by his family as the "life of the party," known for his bright smile and his willingness to always lend a hand to others. A native of New Haven who attended school in Hamden, his death marked the city's 18th homicide of that year. In the immediate aftermath, New Haven's mayor, Justin Elicker, visited the scene and spoke with neighbors, expressing his sorrow over the tragic loss of life and reiterating his commitment to combating violence in the city.
The New Haven Police Department's Investigative Services Division took charge of the case, launching a full investigation into the shooting. Authorities appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible for Mills' death. Despite their efforts and the passage of time, public online sources available through January 2022 did not contain information regarding any arrests made or suspects identified in connection with the homicide. The case, as of that time, appeared to remain unresolved, leaving a family and a community to mourn a life taken too soon.
