On the evening of September 8, 2021, a burst of gunfire on Newhall Street in New Haven, Connecticut, tragically cut short the life of 27-year-old Trequon Lawrence. A Black male, Lawrence was in his car between Division and Thompson streets when he was struck by multiple bullets. The New Haven Police Department was alerted to the shooting at approximately 8:18 p.m. by the city's ShotSpotter system and upon arrival, officers discovered the gravely wounded Lawrence.
He was quickly transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Trequon, affectionately known as "Tre," was a New Haven native who had recently become a homeowner and was employed in the transport department at Yale New Haven Hospital. A graduate of Hyde Leadership High School, he was remembered as a devoted father to his young son. His life had been marked by recent tragedy as well, having lost his infant daughter just months before his own death.
The shooting marked the 22nd homicide in New Haven in 2021, and the third in just a four-day span, prompting a statement of frustration from Mayor Justin Elicker over the city's ongoing gun violence.
