In the early morning hours of May 18, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet near the intersection of George and Orchard Streets in New Haven, Connecticut. When emergency responders arrived at the scene around 5:50 a.m., they found Hopeton Jack, a 44-year-old male, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, marking the city's 11th homicide of a year increasingly troubled by violence.
Jack, who was originally from New York but had family in New Haven and a last known address in Waterbury, became another victim of a surge in gun violence that was plaguing the city and the nation.
In the wake of the shooting, then-Acting Police Chief Renee Dominguez and Mayor Justin Elicker addressed the public, expressing their concern over the tragic turn of events. They highlighted the police department's efforts to combat the rising tide of violence, noting that 191 firearms had been taken off the streets so far that year. Despite these efforts, they stressed that law enforcement could not solve the problem alone. Dominguez made a direct plea to the community for assistance, asking anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it might seem, to contact the detective bureau or use the city's anonymous tip line to help bring the person or persons responsible to justice.
