On a summer afternoon in New Haven, Connecticut, a 22-year-old Black / African American woman named Ciera "Cece" Jones Whitfield was standing outside her home in the Hill neighborhood. It was July 5, 2021, and in a sudden burst of violence, she was shot in the head in broad daylight at the corner of Truman Street and Clover Place. Her birth mother, who was nearby, heard what she thought were fireworks, only to discover her daughter lying on the porch.
Whitfield was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but two days later, on July 7, 2021, she succumbed to her injuries. Her death marked the city's 16th homicide of the year.
The investigation into the murder of Ciera Jones Whitfield continued for two years. Then, in August 2023, the New Haven Police Department, along with federal investigators, announced a significant breakthrough in the case. Two alleged members of the "Exit 8" street gang were arrested in connection with the killing. The suspects were identified as Tyjon "TJ" Preston, who was 21 at the time of his arrest, and Antwan "Bandz" Hill, who was 19. They were both charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Authorities stated that both men were believed to have fired weapons during the incident.
The motive behind the shooting was reportedly linked to rap lyrics that Whitfield, an aspiring rapper, had written which were critical of the Exit 8 gang. The arrests were part of a larger federal indictment targeting the violent activities of the gang, which included drug trafficking and other acts of violence. In May 2024, Tyjon Preston pleaded guilty to a racketeering charge stemming from his involvement with the gang and admitted to his role in several violent acts, including the murder of Ciera Jones Whitfield. As part of a plea agreement, he faces a recommended sentence of between 22 and 30 years in prison. For her family, including both her birth and adoptive mothers, the arrests brought a measure of gratitude that her alleged killers would face justice, though they acknowledged that nothing could fill the void left by her death.
