An 18-year-old Black male named Anthony Strother was fatally shot on the night of May 16, 2022, in New Haven, Connecticut. The incident occurred on South Genesee Street, in the vicinity of East Ramsdell Street and Harper Avenue. Responding to a report of a person shot at approximately 11:20 p.m., police officers discovered Strother at the scene with gunshot wounds.
He was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The New Haven Police Department's Bureau of Identification processed the scene and collected ballistic evidence. Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit are leading the investigation into what has been classified as a homicide. At the time, Strother's death marked the fourth homicide in New Haven that year. Authorities have urged any witnesses with information to come forward, offering avenues for anonymous tips.
While the investigation into Strother's killing is ongoing, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with his death. A related incident occurred at a vigil held for Strother on South Genesee Street, where a juvenile was arrested after a fight broke out and the individual was found to be in possession of a handgun. However, this arrest was not directly linked to Strother's murder. Community leaders and street outreach workers who had been mentoring Strother, noting his efforts to improve his life, joined his family in calling for justice and an end to gun violence.
