In the summer of 2013, a young man's life was cut short on a front porch in New Haven, Connecticut. Errol Marshall III, a 19-year-old male, was found deceased at approximately 10:30 p.m. on the evening of July 3rd. Emergency responders, upon their arrival at the Division Street residence, pronounced him dead at the scene from a gunshot wound. Marshall was a lifelong resident of the city, born on February 12, 1994.
The investigation into Marshall's death quickly became intertwined with
another shooting that had occurred earlier the same day. Around 12:30 p.m., just hours before Marshall was killed, 23-year-old Brian Gibson was fatally shot on South Genesee Street in a nearby public housing complex. New Haven police publicly stated their belief that the two homicides were not random acts of violence but were connected. This assertion led to public warnings from law enforcement against any potential retaliatory actions in the community.
While the investigation into Brian Gibson's murder progressed, leading to the arrest of 19-year-old Jahmal Fulcher in November 2013, the case of Errol Marshall's death remained without a suspect. Fulcher was subsequently charged and, in November 2015, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter with a firearm in Gibson's death, resulting in a 20-year prison sentence. Despite this development in the connected case, there has been no publicly reported progress in identifying a suspect or making an arrest in Marshall's homicide.
As of early 2025, the investigation into the death of Errol Marshall remains open and is considered an unsolved case. Authorities have continued to seek information from the public to aid in their investigation, hoping to one day bring closure to the family and friends of the young man whose life was taken that July night. A small memorial with candles and messages was created for Marshall near the porch where he was found.
