On a Sunday afternoon, July 26, 2015, Everett Scott, a 47-year-old Black male, was fatally shot in Hartford, Connecticut. The incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. as Scott sat in his maroon minivan on Kenyon Court in the city's North End. Police responded to reports of shots fired in the area and discovered him inside the vehicle with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, where he later died.
Authorities at the time described the homicide as being "narcotics related."
The investigation into the death of Everett Scott, which was the city's 19th homicide of 2015, was handled by the Hartford Police Department's Major Crimes Division. After several months of investigation, which included processing evidence at the state crime lab and interviewing multiple witnesses, arrest warrants were issued for two suspects.
In November 2015, authorities made arrests in the case. Phillip Williams, 27, was already in the custody of the Department of Correction on unrelated charges and was charged in court on November 5. The second suspect, 21-year-old Keith Hurst, was located on November 9 at an apartment on Folly Brook Boulevard in Wethersfield by Hartford officers and the U.S. Marshal Service Violent Fugitive Task Force. Hurst attempted to flee but was apprehended. Both men, described as convicted felons with multiple prior arrests in Hartford, were charged with felony murder, robbery, and firearm violations. Williams was held on a $2.5 million bond, while Hurst was held on a $1 million bond.
