In the early hours of a Friday morning in Hartford, Connecticut, the life of 39-year-old Jonathan Roseboro, a Black male from West Hartford, was tragically cut short. On August 11, 2023, just after 1:15 a.m., a hail of bullets shattered the predawn stillness in the Parkville neighborhood. Roseboro and another man, 34-year-old Jose Valdes, were targeted in a violent shooting near the intersection of Park and Hazel streets.
The assailants, a group of four shooters, arrived in a dark-colored Nissan sedan, unleashed a barrage of gunfire, and then sped away from the scene, leaving two men mortally wounded.
When police responded to the scene, they discovered both Roseboro and Valdes unresponsive. One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The sheer violence of the attack was evident, with at least 17 bullet holes found in the surrounding area, striking a house, a commercial building, and a car. The incident was one of several recent shootings in the city that shared a similar pattern of multiple shooters and numerous rounds fired, contributing to a surge in homicides in Hartford that year.
The investigation into the double homicide was swift to begin, with law enforcement identifying the suspects as four extremely dangerous individuals. Police later located the Nissan used in the shooting engulfed in flames on Woodland Street in Windsor, believing another vehicle had picked up the perpetrators. Authorities also released images of a silver Audi with a sunroof and tinted windows that they believe the suspects used in other targeted shootings in the nights leading up to the murders of Roseboro and Valdes. Despite these efforts and the public release of information about the suspects and their vehicle, no arrests have been made in connection with the killings.
