On February 27, 2026, a 911 call from a concerned family member initiated a sequence of events that would end in the death of Steven Jones, a 55-year-old Black man from Hartford, Connecticut. The family reported that Jones was experiencing an acute mental health crisis, had harmed himself, and was in possession of a knife. The first officer to arrive on Blue Hills Avenue found Jones on the front stoop of his apartment, holding a large knife.
Responding officers initially attempted to
de-escalate the situation, speaking to Jones in a calm manner and trying to convince him to drop the weapon. An attempt to subdue him with a Taser proved to be ineffective. As more officers arrived, they created a perimeter, continuing to plead with Jones to release the knife, with onlookers also yelling for him not to be shot. The dynamic of the encounter shifted with the arrival of Officer Joseph Magnano. Within seconds of exiting his vehicle, Magnano drew his firearm and repeatedly commanded Jones to drop the knife, warning him that he would be shot. As Jones walked steadily toward him in the street, Officer Magnano fired nine times, causing Jones to collapse.
Jones was transported to Saint Francis Hospital in critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries on March 3, 2026. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later ruled his death a homicide, with the cause being complications from gunshot wounds to the torso. The officer who fired the shots, Joseph Magnano, was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, which is standard protocol. The Connecticut Office of Inspector General and the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Squad are jointly investigating the incident.
