In the early hours of April 5, 2017, the ShotSpotter system in Hartford's South End detected the sound of six gunshots, but no calls were made to 911. Responding to the alert at around 12:30 a.m., police discovered 24-year-old Jimmy Gonzalez, a Hispanic male, in the driveway of 38 King Street. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to Hartford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

Hartford man was not a random act of violence; they stated that Gonzalez was targeted. Despite the technological alert that pinpointed the gunfire, authorities found no eyewitnesses to the crime. Police spent hours at the scene on King Street, collecting evidence and reviewing video footage from the area in an effort to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
A deputy police chief noted that a nearby address had been a "challenge" for the department due to drug activity, but he clarified that, at least in the initial stages of the investigation, Gonzalez's murder did not appear to be directly connected to it.
