Deon Rodney, a 31-year-old Black/African American male, was working his shift as a barber at Just Right Cutz on Park Avenue in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on the evening of October 14, 2017. The day was nearing its end, and several customers, including a young boy whose hair Rodney had just finished cutting, were inside the shop. The relative peace of the evening was shattered when an altercation that began outside spilled into the barbershop.
Two men had attempted to rob another man in the parking lot, and their intended victim fled into the shop seeking safety.
One of the assailants, Jordan Hinton, followed the man inside, brandishing a handgun and creating panic among the customers. Without hesitation, Deon Rodney intervened to protect the man and the other patrons in the shop. He confronted and tackled Hinton, initiating a struggle that moved from inside the barbershop to the pavement outside. As the two men wrestled, the second assailant, Mark Christian, who had been waiting outside, fired a single shot, striking Rodney. The two attackers then fled the scene. Rodney was rushed to St. Vincent's Medical Center, but he succumbed to a gunshot wound to the abdomen hours later. He was widely hailed as a hero for his selfless actions that saved the lives of his customers.
The Bridgeport Police launched an investigation into the city's 22nd homicide of the year. Their efforts led to the arrest of 32-year-old Mark Christian just a few weeks later, on October 30, 2017. He was charged with murder and robbery, among other offenses. The second suspect, Jordan Hinton, remained at large for nearly a year. He was eventually apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Troy, New York, in the summer of 2018 and extradited back to Connecticut to face charges.
Both men were brought to justice for their roles in Deon Rodney's death. In October 2022, Mark Christian pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter with a firearm and attempted first-degree robbery. In May 2023, a jury found Jordan Hinton guilty of felony murder and first-degree manslaughter with a firearm as an accessory. Hinton was subsequently sentenced to 40 years in prison for his part in the crime that took the life of a man remembered for his bravery and his final act of protecting others.
