In the early morning hours of August 27, 2023, the life of 26-year-old Johnny Ray Barnes, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short by gun violence in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The incident unfolded outside the V.I.P. Lounge on Pembroke Street, where a dispute escalated into a fatal confrontation. Police were alerted to the scene by the ShotSpotter system, which detected multiple gunshots.
Upon arrival, they discovered Barnes unresponsive at the club's entrance, suffering from a gunshot wound to the back of the neck. He was rushed to Bridgeport Hospital but was pronounced dead.
Investigators quickly pieced together the events of that morning using surveillance footage from the nightclub. The video captured a large group of men in a physical altercation near the doorway. During the brawl, a man later identified as Jermaine Ogrinc, 37, of Bridgeport, was seen emerging from a nearby home and firing a weapon into the crowd, striking another man in the leg. Shortly after Ogrinc's actions, the video showed 21-year-old Taquan Donald of Ansonia allegedly pulling out a handgun and firing at Barnes before fleeing the scene.
In the weeks following the shooting, the Bridgeport Police Department, in collaboration with FBI and DEA task forces, worked to identify and apprehend those responsible. On October 3, 2023, Jermaine Ogrinc was arrested and charged with first-degree assault and criminal possession of a firearm for his role in the incident that injured the second victim. A few days later, on October 6, authorities arrested Taquan Donald and charged him with the murder of Johnny Ray Barnes. At the time of his arrest for the murder, Donald was already awaiting trial for a separate attempted murder charge. This brought a swift, yet somber, development in a case that highlighted the persistent issue of gun violence in the community.
