In the early hours of September 27, 2020, the life of 31-year-old Daron Jones, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short on a porch in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Shortly after midnight, the city's ShotSpotter system detected gunfire on Worth Street. When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Jones unresponsive on the porch of a home, having sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, Jarrel Baker. Within a week of the incident, Baker was taken into custody by the Bridgeport Police Tactical Narcotics Team. At the time of his arrest, he was found to be in possession of a handgun. During a subsequent interview with detectives, Baker confessed to shooting Jones. He claimed the shooting stemmed from an ongoing feud with an associate of Jones and stated he believed Jones was setting him up to be shot, as Baker himself had been shot multiple times in the past. He expressed remorse, telling police he did not intend to kill Jones.
Jarrel Baker was initially charged with murder, criminal possession of a firearm, and carrying a pistol without a permit. In January 2024, as his case was about to go to trial, Baker pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter with a firearm. In March 2024, a judge sentenced him to 35 years in prison, to be followed by five years of special parole. During the sentencing, it was noted that Baker had an extensive criminal history with 16 prior felony convictions. The family of Daron Jones was present in the courtroom, seeking closure for their loss. His father described him as a great son and a beloved individual, highlighting that his son's positive reputation in the community led to the quick identification of the person responsible. Jones was remembered by his family as a hardworking father, a twin brother, and a person with a magnetic personality who was loved by many.
