On the night of November 6, 2021, Raheem Lynch, a 24-year-old male from Bridgeport, Connecticut, was out celebrating a joyous occasion—he had just secured a new job. He and his friends were at the Mystique nightclub on Main Street, enjoying the evening. Shortly before 2 a.m., as the club was closing, Lynch and other patrons began to leave. It was in these moments, just steps away from the nightclub, that his life was tragically cut short. A friend drove Lynch to St.
Vincent's Medical Center, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a senseless act of violence where Lynch was an innocent bystander. Detectives determined that the incident stemmed from a physical altercation inside the club involving another patron and a man identified as Jaquan "Jiggy" Bryant, a 32-year-old from Waterbury. After the fight, Bryant left the club, got into a white sedan, and drove past. He then fired approximately six shots at the man he had fought with. Bryant missed his intended target, and one of the bullets struck Lynch as he was sitting in a nearby car, waiting to go home.
Bridgeport Police quickly identified Bryant as the suspect. He was arrested on November 30, 2021, and charged with murder and criminal possession of a firearm. At the time of the shooting, Bryant was on probation for a prior conviction and was also awaiting trial on separate gun charges. Family members of Lynch, some of whom traveled from Jamaica, were present in the courtroom when Bryant was arraigned.
After a week-long trial before a three-judge panel, Jaquan Bryant was convicted of murder on November 26, 2024. Investigators used surveillance footage from outside the club and witness statements to piece together the events of that fatal night, proving that Lynch was not involved in the initial dispute and was not the intended target. Bryant faces a sentence of up to 60 years in prison.
