In the early hours of May 16, 2021, a night of illicit revelry in Bridgeport, Connecticut, turned into a scene of chaos and bloodshed, claiming the life of 40-year-old Norman Charles Peter, a Black male from Stamford. The tragedy unfolded in the basement of a building at 1023 Main Street, which was being operated as an illegal after-hours nightclub.
Responding to reports of gunfire at approximately 1:56 a.m., police officers arrived to a grim discovery.
Inside the makeshift club, authorities found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims, Charles "Dimples" Barnes, a 38-year-old from Bloomfield, was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head. Norman Charles Peter was found alive, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his arm, abdomen, and thigh. He was rushed to St. Vincent's Medical Center for emergency treatment, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The environment in which the shooting occurred was described as dangerously ill-equipped for a large gathering. The basement venue lacked basic safety measures such as sprinklers, multiple exits, and functioning smoke detectors. When the shots rang out, panic ensued, with patrons scrambling for the single exit and overturning tables in their desperate attempt to escape the violence.
In the aftermath of the double homicide, the Bridgeport Police Department launched an investigation. While no arrests have been made directly for the murders of Peter and Barnes, the investigation did lead to the apprehension of individuals connected to the illegal operation of the nightclub. Josiah Israel, 35, and Christopher Mojica, 37, were charged with illegal sale of alcohol, conspiracy to commit illegal sale of alcohol, and second-degree reckless endangerment. The organizer of the event, 37-year-old Mitchel Noel, was also charged with second-degree reckless endangerment for renting the unsafe basement space for the party. The case also had repercussions for a probationary police officer who was present at the illegal club and lost her badge after it was found at the scene, leading to her termination. The investigation into who is responsible for the deaths of Norman Charles Peter and Charles Barnes remains ongoing, and authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.
