In the early morning hours of Sunday, August 9, 2026, the life of 46-year-old Johnny L. Nesmith was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire at the P.T. Barnum public housing complex in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Around 1 a.m., multiple 911 calls flooded into the Bridgeport Police Department, with panicked callers reporting a person had been shot. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Nesmith outside of Building 21, unresponsive and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services rendered aid at the scene before rushing him to Bridgeport Hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced deceased.
The shooting marked the sixth homicide in the city of Bridgeport for the year 2026. The incident occurred just hours after a reunion for P.T. Barnum residents had been held in a park across the street from where Nesmith was found. A crowd was reportedly near him when the shots rang out, yet the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear. Homicide detectives and the Major Crime unit spent several hours at the scene, collecting evidence and gathering information in an attempt to piece together the events of that fatal morning. Nesmith, who had previously lived in Bridgeport, had a more recent address in Hamden.
The investigation into Johnny L. Nesmith's death is ongoing, with no arrests having been made and no suspects publicly identified. Bridgeport police are urging any witnesses who were present at the time of the shooting to come forward with information. Detective Laura Azevedo-Rasuk has been named as the lead investigator on the case, and authorities have made public pleas for community assistance in bringing justice to Nesmith's family. The case remains an active homicide investigation, leaving a community in mourning and a family searching for answers in the wake of a senseless act of violence.
