On the late evening of June 22, 2020, a 52-year-old Black male named Wayne Canute Woolcock was fatally shot in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The incident occurred at approximately 10:45 p.m. when police were dispatched to the vicinity of 750 William Street following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Woolcock suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to Bridgeport Hospital for medical attention but ultimately succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
His death marked the city of Bridgeport's eighth homicide of that year and was one of several violent incidents to take place in a short period. Earlier on the very same day, another man had been killed in a separate shooting. Woolcock's killing contributed to a grim tally of gun violence that plagued the city, leaving community members on edge.
In the wake of the shooting, an investigation was launched by Bridgeport police detectives. However, despite their efforts to uncover a motive and identify those responsible, the case has grown cold. To date, no suspects have been publicly named, and no arrests have been made in connection with Woolcock's murder. Authorities have urged the public to come forward with any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the investigation, but so far, justice for Wayne Woolcock and his family remains elusive. He was remembered by loved ones for his positive energy, kindness, and unwavering care for those around him.
