On the evening of May 24, 2017, LaWane Toles, a 43-year-old Black or African American man, was found deceased on Railroad Avenue in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene near Went Field Park. At the time of his death, Toles, a resident of New Haven, was working for the New Haven Department of Public Works, a job his family said he was very happy with.
