On the evening of June 14, 2021, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the life of 39-year-old Shamar Swinton, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. Around 7:41 p.m., the sounds of shots fired in the 800 block of State Street prompted calls to the Bridgeport Police Department. Shortly after, another report came in about a car crash at the intersection of State Street and Park Avenue.
Responding officers arrived to find a black Honda Accord that had crashed.
Behind the wheel was Shamar Swinton, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel rushed him to St. Vincent's Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Swinton's death, which was ruled the city's seventh homicide of the year, was immediately taken over by the Detective Bureau. A large crime scene was processed on State Street as investigators began to piece together the events of that evening. Despite their efforts and several leads, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The Bridgeport Police Department has appealed to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case.
The day after Swinton's death, another man, Dha'moni Lockhart, was also fatally shot in Bridgeport. Law enforcement sources suggested that both Swinton and Lockhart were associated with a gang connected to the Greene Homes Federal Housing Complex and that their deaths may have been targeted assassinations. This information came to light during an investigation into a separate incident where police were monitoring a gathering of over 100 people mourning the two men. Authorities had received intelligence that some individuals in the group were armed and intended to retaliate against a rival gang they believed was responsible for the killings. However, this connection has not led to any announced arrests in Swinton's case, which remains an active and unsolved homicide investigation.
