In the late afternoon hours of December 27, 2020, the life of a 28-year-old Black/African American man named DaJuan Simmons came to a violent end in Bridgeport, Connecticut. At approximately 3:00 p.m., police responded to reports of gunshots in the vicinity of Norman Street. Arriving officers discovered a car crash on Wood Avenue and inside the vehicle, they found DaJuan, known to friends and family as "Scooter," unconscious.
The officers were forced to break a window to reach him, only to discover he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his head and torso.
Paramedics treated Simmons at the scene before rushing him to St. Vincent's Medical Center. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries about two hours later. The incident marked the 24th homicide in the city of Bridgeport for that year. Detectives began an extensive investigation, closing off a large crime scene on Wood Avenue. The preliminary evidence suggested a targeted attack; it appeared another vehicle had pulled alongside Simmons' car, and an occupant from that car opened fire.
In the wake of the shooting, Simmons' family was left devastated. His aunt described him as a "sweetheart" who was always willing to help others and who loved his family deeply. She lamented the senseless violence that had stolen his life and pleaded for justice. As of the latest available information, the investigation into the death of DaJuan Simmons remains ongoing. No arrests have been made, and police have not publicly identified any suspects in the case. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.
