On the morning of August 24, 2017, Cadell Moore, a 34-year-old Black / African American male, was innocently working on his Chevrolet sport utility vehicle on Sixth Street in Bridgeport, Connecticut. At around 11 a.m., gunfire erupted, and Moore, bent over his engine, was struck in the head by a bullet. He was not the intended target of the shooting.
The hail of bullets was aimed at a nearby house where members of a local street gang were located.
The investigation revealed an ongoing feud between David Shavers, a 22-year-old from Norwalk, and members of the city's East Side gang over a drug dispute. Earlier that day, Shavers had been attacked by gang members after leaving his probation office. Seeking retaliation, Shavers borrowed a car, drove to Sixth Street, and opened fire on a house he knew the gang members used. Moore, unfortunately, was caught in the line of fire and died from his injuries.
In October 2017, David Shavers was arrested and charged with the murder of Cadell Moore. His first trial in 2022 ended in a mistrial after the jury deadlocked. However, in a second trial in July 2023, Shavers was convicted of intentional first-degree manslaughter with a firearm, attempted first-degree assault, and criminal possession of a firearm. While he was acquitted of the murder charge, the subsequent convictions ensured accountability for Moore's death. In November 2023, David Shavers was sentenced to 55 years in prison for his role in the tragic death of Cadell Moore, a father of six who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
