On the cold Christmas Eve of 2016, the life of 27-year-old Hispanic male Miguel Miguelito Rivera was tragically cut short in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Just after midnight, Rivera was at a weekly gathering of car enthusiasts in the parking lot of an AutoZone on North Avenue. The festive atmosphere was shattered when a gold Cadillac Deville abruptly pulled up.
Two men, later identified as Xavier Rivera and Moises Contreras, emerged from the vehicle.
They seized Miguel Rivera, dragging him into an adjacent parking lot. There, they began to pistol-whip him, demanding to know the whereabouts of their property. Witnesses later testified that Xavier Rivera believed Miguel had previously burglarized his apartment, stealing cash, sneakers, and marijuana. The brutal assault escalated as the men opened fire on Miguel.
Despite being gravely wounded with gunshots to his legs, back, and torso, Miguel managed to stagger away from his attackers. He collapsed near the drive-thru window of a neighboring Popeye's restaurant, where he died at the scene. The shooters fled, leaving a scene of chaos and initiating a homicide investigation.
Bridgeport police detectives quickly developed leads in the case. Within a month, on January 24, 2017, 29-year-old Moises Contreras was taken into custody without incident at his mother's home in Bridgeport. A week later, on January 31, the second suspect, 34-year-old Xavier Rivera, who was not related to the victim, was located by the U.S. Marshal's Violent Fugitive Task Force at a home in Manchester. He attempted to flee but was apprehended. Both men faced charges of murder, unlawful restraint, and various firearm offenses. A key piece of evidence in the case was a cellphone recording made by a witness in which Xavier Rivera admitted to the killing. Ultimately, Xavier Rivera was convicted of murder and sentenced to 55 years in prison.
