On a cold January evening in Bridgeport, Connecticut, a heated argument over living arrangements escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 27-year-old Steven Vega. The conflict occurred on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at a residence on Lake Street, culminating in a fatal shooting that sent shockwaves through the community.
That afternoon, police responded to reports of a shooting and discovered Vega on the front steps of the house, suffering from gunshot wounds to his torso and
hand. He was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite undergoing surgery, the young Hispanic man succumbed to his wounds and passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday, January 5, 2025.
Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence. The preliminary investigation revealed that an altercation had begun inside the home before spilling outside. The suspect was identified as 47-year-old Nelson Garcia, the father of Vega's girlfriend. According to an arrest warrant, Garcia was enraged about the crowded living conditions in the home he shared with extended family, including Vega, who was the father of his grandchild.
The dispute reportedly intensified, leading to a physical confrontation between Garcia and his daughter. Vega arrived at the house shortly after, and the altercation tragically ended with Garcia allegedly shooting him. Following the incident, police launched a search for Garcia, who was considered armed and dangerous.
The search for the suspect concluded on Monday, January 6, 2025, when Nelson Garcia turned himself in at the Bridgeport police headquarters. He was subsequently arrested and charged with murder, criminal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of an assault rifle, and third-degree assault. A judge set his bond at $2 million.
