In the early morning hours of June 28, 2020, a dispute outside a business on Columbia Pike in Arlington, Virginia, shattered the night's calm and ended a young man's life. Donovan A. Green Jr., a 21-year-old male from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, was fatally wounded in a burst of gunfire that erupted from a vehicle fleeing the scene. The incident, which also left two other individuals with minor injuries, unfolded just after 2:30 a.m. as a large crowd was dispersing.
Arlington County Police, initially responding to reports of shots fired, soon discovered the grim reality of the situation. While two victims had managed to transport themselves to a nearby hospital for treatment, officers found Donovan Green Jr. inside a vehicle in the 3200 block of Columbia Pike, suffering from severe trauma to his upper body. He was pronounced deceased at the scene, marking the third homicide in Arlington County that year.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify two suspects. Less than a month after the incident, on July 18, 2020, the Arlington County Police Department announced the arrests of 27-year-old Christopher Rather of Oxon Hill, Maryland, and 27-year-old Franklin Lambright of Temple Hills, Maryland. The two men were taken into custody in Prince George's County, Maryland, with the assistance of the local police and the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force.
Both Rather and Lambright were charged with murder in connection with the death of Donovan Green Jr. and were held in Maryland pending their extradition to Virginia to face the charges. Authorities indicated that additional charges were also pending. The arrests brought a measure of progress in a case that stemmed from a dispute that tragically escalated to fatal violence.
