On March 16, 2018, 40-year-old John Giandoni was found dead in his Ballston area home in Arlington, Virginia. Police had been dispatched to his residence for a welfare check that evening and discovered his body. An investigation revealed that Giandoni had sustained gunshot and stab wounds, and a zip tie was found around his mouth. His death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation into Giandoni's murder uncovered a complex web of relationships. Giandoni had a son with a former girlfriend, and the two were involved in a difficult child custody situation. At the time of his death, the ex-girlfriend was reportedly in a relationship with Jitesh Patel, a 42-year-old married father from Woodbine, Maryland.
Four months after Giandoni's death, in July 2018, Jitesh Patel was arrested and charged with murder, burglary while armed, and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Prosecutors alleged that Patel broke into Giandoni's townhouse and shot, stabbed, and choked him to death, possibly to aid his girlfriend in her custody battle with the victim.
The case against Patel was built on circumstantial evidence. Surveillance footage from the afternoon of the murder showed a minivan, similar to Patel's, parked near Giandoni's home. A person was seen exiting the van and entering the residence. Three hours later, after Giandoni returned home, a figure was seen leaving the house and driving away in the minivan. A search of Patel's home revealed a 9mm pistol and ammunition that matched the bullets found at the crime scene.
Jitesh Patel was awaiting trial for the murder of John Giandoni when he was found dead in his Arlington County jail cell on November 11, 2019. The cause of his death was to be determined by the medical examiner.
